ArcelorMittal Dofasco shuts down No. 3 coke plant in Hamilton

The closure decision was made within the company’s decarbonization roadmap announced in 2021, and it was stated that the move was carried out with the aim of reducing environmental impacts. With the plant being decommissioned, a decrease is expected not only in visible emissions but also in benzo(a)pyrene and benzene emissions.

The company also stated that employees working in the coke production unit have been reassigned to different positions within the organization, and individual career plans have been prepared for each employee. While ArcelorMittal Dofasco continues its operations at the remaining No. 2 coke plant, it will also proceed with investments in environmental compliance and equipment maintenance.

The company further emphasized its commitment to long-term decarbonization goals and noted that efforts to improve the environmental performance of its Hamilton facility will continue.

In a statement, Ron Bedard, President and CEO of the company, said:

“Dofasco has a strong 114-year history of steelmaking in Hamilton, and the decommissioning of No. 3 Coke Plant marks another transformation in our technology and processes. Today, my thoughts are with the generations of dedicated coke plant workers at No. 3 who have proudly and excellently performed their work over the years. I would like to thank all past and present employees for their efforts and expertise. Each of them has contributed to making our company one of Canada’s strongest steel producers.”
